Three Rock’s George Dockrell was named cricket’s ICC Associate and Affiliate Player of the Year last weekend following a year round

Part of the U-16 Leinster boy’s cup winning team a couple of years ago, George was chosen ahead of three of his Irish team-mates Paul Stirling, Kevin O’Brien and Ed Joyce, and Afghanistan bowler Dawlat Zadran.

Dockrell, 20, was the leading wicket-taker in the voting period – between 4 August 2011 and 6 August 2012 – taking 43 scalps in ODIs, T20Is and the Intercontinental Cup, the ICC’s four-day tournament for top Associate and Affiliate sides. Dockrell plays county cricket for Somerset, captained Ireland recently in the Under-19 World Cup, and took 14 wickets in T20 internationals, the most by any bowler in world cricket during the voting period.

"It’s great to win such an award and especially to be following the footsteps of an esteemed group of players like William Porterfield and Ryan ten Doeschate, and only at the age of 20, I feel very honoured," Dockrell said after receiving the award in Colombo. "It has been a great year of cricket with I-Cup, U-19s and WCL Championship, and now the WT20, and I’ve been learning a lot to take into this tournament.

"It’s good to be setting high standards, and hopefully I will keep performing well for Ireland in the future."

Free tea/coffee and scones for parents this weekend as we welcome our junior sections back

Both our boys and girls sections will kick off their busy seasons this weekend. Chuck, Wendy and their teams of coaches and volunteers will continue their invaluable work with both underage groups for the year ahead.

The club captains would like the parents of the juniors to join them for free tea/coffee and scones in the clubhouse as they watch both the boys and girls return to action.

All social events for the year set so keep the dates free!

We have set the following dates in place for social occasions during the year. More details on each of these will follow closer to the time.

One date that has yet to be confirmed is a comedy night in the laughter lounge which will more than likely be held in early 2013.

Luke is on a list of 11 players vying for the U-18 club player of the year after captaining the Irish U-16s in the European championships, top-scoring in the competition. He also led TRR to an U-16 league and cup double as well as winning a senior and junior trophy with Wesley College.

The club captains wish everyone a welcome return to the new season

On behalf of all in the committee we would like to wish everyone a welcome return to the club. We hope you are looking forward to the new season as much as we are.

Last April we set out 10 goals which we planned to achieve this year. In short these were:
1. Attract full membership by 30
2. Weekly newsletter
3. Website linked to newsletter
4. Database of all members
5. Clearly defined roles
6. Kitchen to be used by caterer
7. Calendar of events
8. Club dinner
9. Continuously improve TR’s look
10. Integrated coaching structure

Over the summer we have been working, with the help of others within the club, to make inroads on each of these. To date we have achieved the following:

1.New fully functioning website. www.threerockrovershc.com This is now being updated regularly thanks to Stephen Findlater. Should anyone like to help contributing to the website please contact him or Ali at stevie_findlats@yahoo.co.uk or ladies.captain@threerockrovershc.com.

2. Rachel Foley and Stephen are working to link the website into a new newsletter. We hope to have this up and running by the end of the month.

3. We have a database of all members from last year. This will require frequent updating. Should you not be receiving club info please let Colin Huet know so that he can update the database. We will be looking to confirm peoples details during the first few weeks of the season.

4. All unpaid roles (eg fixtures sec, captains, etc.) have been defined and can be viewed on the website. The club administrators role has also been clearly set out and can also be found on the website. We will be meeting with other paid roles in the next few weeks to continue our work on defining who does what.

5. At the July committee meeting we met two caterers and are pleased to announce that Rachel Sterling will be taking over the running of the kitchen. She will commence with teas and coffees at the junior sections on the 8th of September. This will grow to include lunches and sandwiches at weekend games. Supply will obviously depend on demand so please support both the bar and the kitchen following your games. Rachel will be using the kitchen for professional purposes and so access to members will now be restricted.

6. A date and venue for the club dinner has been set. It will be held in the Royal Marine Hotel on the 26th of January. Further detail on this will follow.

7. We are continuing to work on the calander of events so this has yet to be finalised. The pre-season event on the 1st of September will kick everything off. This will be followed closely by the cocktail party on October 13th. The club dinner will be on January 26th and we hope to have an event in the laughter lounge sometime in the New Year also. Should you be keen to hep with an event or have any ideas for events please contact either of us.

8. Over 20 people came to help with the initial clear out of the front car park. Planting of these areas will commence by the end of September. Bruce Johnson has provided us with a list of plants to include. It is also our wish to update the inside of the clubhouse during the season. We would like to paint it, update the furniture if possible and update some of the photographs.

Should you have an interest in helping with any of these items please contact us at either mens.captain@threerockrovershc.com (0863875017) or ladies.captain@threerocrovershc.com (0863762075). We would not have started achieving our goals without the input from club members so far. Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

We are both quite keen to receive feedback from members during the season so feel free to ask us questions on anything we are doing. We are looking forward to seeing you all out and about at various matches and functions throughout the season.
Good luck to all!

Rob Johnson and Ali Keogh

TRR welcomes Cruise Cuisine to the club

The committee is delighted to announce that Rachel Sterling, head of Cruise Cuisine will be running the kitchen from the start of the season.

Rachel has a degree in hotel and catering management and has taught in the Pure Leith Cookery School in London. She runs Cruise Cuisine and operates mainly at outdoor sporting events throughout the country.

Rachel will commence her role in the club kitchen when the Juniors kick off the season on the 15th and 16th of September. She will offer a variety of scones, sandwiches etc initially to start, with a view to branching out into a wider selection once the season gets underway.

As Rachel will be using the kitchen and her own equipment throughout the week access to the room will be restricted to members.

Please come and support both the kitchen and bar throughout the season.

We look forward to sampling some of Rachels fine cooking!

The report from the executive committee for the month of August

Committee Report August 2012

Code of ethics
A resolution will be put forward at the next AGM in support of the code of ethics. We are looking to run a 3hour course in the club in the next few months and hope to get as many coaches and junior coaches involved as possible. A first aid and defibrillator course has been offered to members. We are awaiting a date on the same.

Kitchen
Rachel Sterling will commence work in the kitchen on Sept 8th at the first junior sessions. She will work out of the kitchen during the day and so access by members will now be restricted. She will use her own equipment. Storage behind the bar is to be looked at to maximize space.

Personnel
Siobhan Madeley has been appointed ladies vice captain for the season. Rob Hanna has commenced work as the new cleaner. A ladies 4th coach will be in place by the first week in September. A mens 3rd/4th/5th coach is still required. Jody is due to arrive from South Africa in the next few weeks. We are investigating the possibility that we may be able to get a visa for another South African but this is work in progress.

Kit
A lot of old tempest stock exists but in more or less unusable sizes. We are looking to give it to a club in need in Eastern Europe.

Tournaments
The pre-season event is due to run of the 1st of Sept. Ideas for next years May Fest are being gathered. Ali is to meet with people in relation to this. The ladies side are proposing to look for funding for a trip to Barcelona. This was given the go ahead.

Physio Tender
The club has been approached in relation to renovating one of the lesser used changing rooms into a physio practice. The need for the showers needs to be considered. This is an option that will be discussed further at Council and Committee

Bar Tokens
The option of introducing bar tokens with a subscription discount was discussed. Rob is to meet with other clubs to discuss what systems they use and whether this is suitable.

The IHA’s Stepping Stones Programme for 2012 starts this weekend with HookedforLife coaching event taking place in Grange Road; details below

Hooked on Fun: Coaching 6-9 year olds (2 hours)
This course provides the perfect introduction to coaches, parents and teachers coaching primary age children who are starting hockey for the first time. Whilst the course is designed for coaches working with 6-9 year olds or children of an older age starting hockey for the first time, it introduces a range of concepts that are relevant at an older age group. The course will demonstrate developing through fun and innovative games key fundamental physical literacy skills introducing them first in isolation but then with stick and ball using the basic skills of moving and passing a ball. The course culminates in an introduction to the Fun 4s Game. Participants receive a CD containing 15 session plans and video for areas covered on the course.

Exploring Play: Coaching 10-12 year olds (2 – 2.5 hours)
This course, is the perfect course for coaches, teachers and parents working in Clubs and schools working with 10-12 year olds (HookedforLife Phase 2) but would also cover players above that age who may be introduced to hockey for the first time. It details the key techniques, coaching points, games and exercises to be used with this age group as per the IHA HookedforLife Program. Super 6s game play including basic tactical understanding will be explained along with an overview of how to tackle the key considerations and challenges of early tactical awareness. Participants will receive a CD containing two presentations of the areas covered within the course including exercises and video from international match play that can be shown to the players you are working with.

Empowering Play: Coaching and Training for U14s (2 hours)
Finding stimulating training games and exercises to cover the core skills is often the greatest challenge for teachers and coaches working with this age range and ability. The course is designed for maximising the use of the Play-Practice-Play methodology to develop the awareness of the core techniques and the context in which they will be used in game play.
