A message from Phelie Maguire

This season Rovers graduates, Phelie Maguire and Andy McConnell, are midway through their quest to retain promotion to the Dutch Hoofdklasse, seen as the most competitive domestic league in the world. Playing for "Hurley", ensuring a strong Irish connection, they remain unbeaten with 9 wins from 9 consistently entertaining the crowds with an average of 6 goals a game.

While Hurley aim to gain direct promotion, this cannot be done without financial support that can give the team the best opportunity to reach their goal.

This year Hurley are creating a Mens XI team booklet, full with profiles and advertisement that will be handed out at each game. In addition there is a supporters page where supporters of the players, friends, family and former team mates, can show their support by giving 25Euro in return for a simple message of support.

The one-liners are up to you, they can be funny, simple, whatever!

Should you wish to show your support for Phelie and Andy abroad please give 25 Euro to the following sponsorship account
Bank Account Number:426163168
IBAN: NL38ABNA0426163168
BIC: ABNANL2A

And dont forget to email me your supporters message to pheliemaguire@gmail.com
along with your oneline message of support. Be creative!

Ali Keogh last weekend graduated as part of the European Hockey Federation’s umpire’s development programme (UDP) ‘group four’ during the EHL round 1

She gathered with her fellow umpires and mentors – including Ray O’Connor – and spoke at the event about the programme.

“[The UDP] provides a great opportunity to learn & develop from the wealth of experience of our mentors. The support and encouragement from both mentors and participants was invaluable. Meeting new people at various tournaments helped make the process of stepping up from national level much easier,” she said.

Some of our mens players have been busy representing schools and colleges during this past week

Congrats to Eoin Buttanshaw for helping St Andrews win the All-Ireland Schoolboy’s title, hard luck to all our Wesley players, including Dylan Shirley, Ben McCrea, Johnny Dalrymple,David Williams, Daragh Wlash and Scott Dagg who got to the final of the competition. Also hard luck to Shane Madeley and Michael Maguire who were there coaching Wesley.

Congrats to Stephen West and David Storey for getting selected for the Irish Universities trials following their performances with DCU and RCSI respectively in the past few days at Varsities in Cork.

All news relating to fixtures and results for this week and last

L3 vs Rathgar, front pitch, 2.30pm

As usual Rachel Sterling will be up serving her usual feast of food all weekend. Please pop up after your game.

Last Saturday saw the men’s firsts bounce back to beat YMCA in division one, keeping them second in the division, Alastair Haughton netting a very late winner giving us a deserved 2-1 after controlling most of the game.

The seconds fell 2-1 to the same opposition to end our five-game winning room as we were unable to build on David Storey’s opening goal. The men’s 4ths, meanwhile, got the better of Mullingar in the one other game played on Saturday for the club.

Mairead Lyons moving to the UK

This week the club will lose a valued and treasured player as Mairead Lyons is leaving for the UK.

Over the years Mairead has been a magnificent club member. She successfully earned capital funding during her year as club captain and returned to a committee level in the role of council member last year. She captained and managed a number of teams and has been a hard working, committed player at 1sts and 2nds level all the way up to last season. Her love for the club is infectious and her enthusiastic sideline support was rarely matched.

The committee would like to thank her for all her work and wish her the very best of luck with her move.

Report from meeting on 22nd October

The following points were discussed and decided and this months committee meeting:

IHA SGM
Our club sec, along with 10 other clubs have requested a SGM from the IHA following the recent activity concerning the senior mens squad. The notice was acknowledged and we are awaiting confirmation of a date for the meeting.

Personnel
A new club secretary will be required after Christmas. Rob and Ali are in the process of finding a replacement for Wendy, who has done a fantastic job in the last few years. A mens vice is also still required. Anna Carson has stepped down from her role as Past captain following her move to London. We wish her good luck.

Junior events
Siobhan and 5 other volunteers have planned 3 events for our junior section. The first is due to the place at Christmas and details will be announced soon.

Club dinner
The club dinner will be open to all members, plus partners and guests. It will be formal dress and will be held on the 26th of January in the Royal Marine Hotel Dun Laoghaire. A price will be announced in the coming weeks.

Bar vouchers have arrived and are in the process of being handed out. They will be given to all who have paid subs in part or full before the 31st of October. Vouchers can be collected behind the bar after this weekend.

Joint Concil & Committee meeting
The agenda for the joint committee and council meeting due on the 24th of October was discussed. Each group will give an update of their own activities to date so far, and the topics of membership numbers and pitch replacement will also be covered.

Accounts
Subs projections for the season have been done and the budget appears to be in line with predictions so far. One area we will need to work on is fundraising. Two events are being considered for later in the year.

Recruitment
The need to attract more players was discussed. A number of ideas including ‘back to hockey’ were discussed. We will consider each option and decide which to run with for the rest of this year at next months meeting

Lunch now on 17th of November

Due to a change in league fixtures the pavilion lunch advertised in the recent letter has now changed to 1pm on November 17th. It will take place prior to the men’s 1sts game v fingal. We will need to limit places initially as we trial this event out but hope to run more in the season if successful.

Rob Johnson will be in touch shortly with invites.

Training starts back and is open to all. Details on Budapest for anyone looking to come support

For any guys interested in indoor Liam Canning has booked the hall in St.Columbas from the 31st Oct. He intends running sessions for anyone interested in learning how to play, improve their 2d technical skills in the more intense and smaller indoor court from then. Don’t be shy come up and have a go. It would be useful if players had their own sticks and gloves (cricket glove ok). As time goes on he will need to restrict this to those players who are aspiring competitive players.

We are current national champions and have been for four out of the last five years and won promotion to Challenge 1 last year in Turkey. This year we are going as Irish Champions to Budapest to compete in the European Championships. The squad will be leaving Feb 14th 15.15 Aer Lingus flight, playing matches on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday and flying back on Sunday 17th on the 19.15 flight. Budapest is a great location and why not makes a weekend of it and come and support. Flights reasonable, currently E 185 and less if returning on the Monday.
