Patricia Markham Obituary
The Club is greatly saddened to hear the news of the death of former Maid and Honorary Life Member, Patricia Markham in Devon earlier this month. Patricia was an active member of Maids HC as player, as umpire, as team selector and as touring member of the Llandudno touring team which happily caroused in Wales every Easter for many years. Her most notable contribution to the Club was her record-setting faithful service as Club Treasurer for a period of 30 years, a record unsurpassed to this day. After her English husband’s retirement and onset of his health issues, Patricia found herself having to move to the UK where she settled on the South Coast but always kept in regular loving contact with her many hockey friends in Dublin and Leinster. Recent years had brought her own health challenges which she faced with great spirit but it is with heavy hearts that we send our sympathies to her son David, to her extended family, both in TRR and in wider hockey circles.

Cocktail Party
The Annual cocktail Party was held on Saturday in the Clubhouse. Congratulations to the social committee for organising and hosting what was a good night for all those that attended! We are already looking forward to next year!

On Sunday we welcomed Monkstown and Pembroke with their 5th class squads while 2nd, 3rd and 4th class travelled to the same clubs for their first Blitz of the season.
On top of that our 6th class Boys played their first league matches with a win and a draw while our 1st Year girls won one, drew one and lost one.
The Under 14 Boys travelled to Monkstown and came away with a 2-2 draw while our Under 16B Boys beat Wickow in their first game of the season.
The Inter B’s drew while the Inter D’s lost
Our Under 10 Boys travelled to Monkstown to Sunday afternoon with some great play both individually and as a squad.

In total 280 Youths wore the TRRHC colours this weekend with determination, passion and most importantly fun.

Golden Oldies
Courtesy of Orla McKeown
In September 2019 four members of Three Rock attended the World Golden Oldies Hockey Festival in Vancouver, namely Nick West, David Costello (both Vets members), Órla McKeown (Pavilion Member) and Cillian West (Under 16s member). The festival was being hosted by West Vancouver Hockey Club who will be hosting the Men’s Olympic Play-off between Canada and Ireland later this month.

The World Golden Oldies is a friendly Hockey Festival for over 35s and is played in a different hemisphere every 2 years. This year’s Festival was attended by around 25 Club Teams from Ireland, England, Germany, USA, Canada, Argentina, Chile, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia and Hong Kong.

David and Nick played as ever for the Irish Gamesters, a touring team which, despite its name, has players from Canada, England, the US, New Zealand and Australia (many with Irish ancestry) as well as Irish players from Three Rock, Monkstown, Glenanne and Wicklow.

In the article picture you can see (L-R) David, Orla, Cillian and Nick just before the Opening Ceremony where Órla carried the Irish flag in the Parade of Nations through the University of British Colombia.

What a weekend for the Men’s 1s in Barcelona!

The Men’s 1s had a weekend to remember in Barcelona as they created some Irish Hockey history in the Pau Negre Stadium against some of Europe’s best.

The squad had spent weeks in preparation for their first game in Barcelona against Scottish Champions Grange. Their match tipped off the second day of action in the Catalan city with a 9.45am start time or 8.45am Irish time!

The match could not have gone much better as goals from Jody Hosking and Sam Grace had Rovers 2-0 up at half-time. Further goals from Ben Walker, James Walker and Ali Empey, all graduates of the Rovers Youths, sealed an emphatic 5-0 win against Grange and a first ever win for an Irish side in the KO16!

Read the EHL’s report here: GRANGE v TRR

This earned the gents a KO8 match against none other then Rot Weiss Kohn. finalists in 2 of the past 3 seasons! Sunday morning saw the team go toe to toe with the Germans who had no less then 7 Internationals in their squad. The lads went 2-0 down in the first half but a stirring second half performance saw the lads nearly turn the game on it’s head and perform what would have been a huge upset against such opposition.

Goals from Ben Walker and Ross Canning where not enough thought as the lads fell to a 4-2 defeat and bowed out of the EHL for another season.

Read the EHL’s match report here: Rot Weiss v TRR

Huge well done to all the squad, management and their supporters who have worked tirelessly to get to this point! The weekend’s performance could not have been possible without the hard work, dedication and time from many over years!

Congratulations again to all!

Results September 21st
M1s lost 3-1 to UCD
M2 won 6-0 at Railway
M3 won 5-3 at Wicklow
M4 drew 3-3 away to Glenanne
M6 won 3-0 against Wicklow

Below is quick report from the 3s game courtesy of their captain Ross.

A relatively young 3s team travelled to Wicklow on a sunny end-of-summer Saturday to kick off their season. With 4 players getting their TRR 3s debuts, Mark Smyth, Mark Kingston, Cillian Jennings and Mariano Pitre, it was a new look but strong team. A solid start put the 3s 3-0 up in the first half with debut goals coming from both Marks and a forehand volley rounding off the 1st half goals from the midfield maestro Peter Hinds.

A classic case of start-of-season concentration issues and improved opposition play at the start of the 2nd half brought Wicklow back into the reckoning with 2 goals in quick succession. The 3s regained control again however to finish the game number 1 with a 5-3 victory and a Mark K hat trick to boot!

The Club is saddened to note the passing in recent times of some former Maids of the Mountain members, friends to many in TRRHC.

The Club is saddened to note the passing in recent times of some former Maids of the Mountain members, friends to many in TRRHC. Our deepest sympathies go to the families of Joan Blackmore (Obituary below), Joy Mawhinney, Anne Anderson and Hazel Armstrong.

Many thanks to Orla McKeown who compiled this obituary as a touching tribute to a member of the Rovers family and hockey community as whole.

Obituary
Joan Blackmore (née Matthews)
13th July 1936 – 17th August 2019

The hockey community in Ireland changed for many when we heard the sad news of the recent death of former and long-standing Maids of the Mountain HC member, Joan Blackmore following a short illness.

Cork born, Joan Matthews brought a uniquely feisty and imaginative Cork attitude to life. Always an outstanding athlete, she represented Ireland in the sport of fencing. Trained as a PE teacher, she taught in Sligo before she and Ken returned to Dublin and was able to unite her love of sport with that deep sense of caring for younger people which continued throughout her life as a teacher, an inspirational hockey coach and Matriarch of all the student and teaching body in Wesley College Ballinteer during husband, Ken Blackmore’s tenure as Headmaster, and indeed beyond into their mutual retirement.

A formidably talented athlete, she not only represented both Munster and later Connaught in Interprovincial competition, but also represented Ireland at hockey as well as in the sport of fencing. In addition, she was one of the three farsighted individuals who introduced indoor hockey to Leinster circles in the late 1970s. She also took an active role in the organising ( being organiser of Support Services and also Head of Security during the event) of the 8th Womens Hockey World Cup in 1994 which was held in UCD, the first time such a large hockey event had come to Ireland.

It was as a start of season hockey coach that most of the younger Maids, now Pavilion members of TRR, will remember her, ever encouraging, ever supportive, ever ready to pass on an unusual skill which gave an edge in a match.

When the history of the Maids of the Mountain HC was being researched, prior to the 1999 merger with TRR, the authors were thrilled to discover Joan’s history of activism with the aim of gaining female changing and showering facilities in the then shared grounds at Templeogue. There were no female facilities and when normal lobbying methods yielded no results, Joan took direct action. After one match, she grabbed her soap and towel and marched into the male facilities to claim a much needed shower. Female facilities were provided as a matter of priority very soon after, becoming the norm now expected and provided as a matter of course.

As a longstanding Maids HC member, Joan was always available to give of herself both in a coaching and advisory capacity and on a personal level to the younger Maids, ever the caring mentor. She also served officially as Club Captain in the 1962/1963 season and as Club President from 1987 to 1989. When in the post Templeogue years, the club needed a home ground and a mini kitchen, Joan very kindly arranged for the Wesley school facilities to be made available for home matches. She was strategically involved in the planning and researches to try and find a permanent home ground for the Club. She was also a huge financial support to Maids HC and when funds were required to enable the club to buy into the Grange Road facility as Licensees after the sale of the Templeogue grounds for housing in the early 1980’s, Joan, along with the late Jill Cox, provided an interest – free loan to the Club to enable the Club to invest in the facility and leading directly to the security of tenure enjoyed since the 1999 merger of Maids HC with TRR.

After many years in Wesley, Joan and Ken retired and made their home in rural Wicklow free to enjoy the company of their five sons, five daughters in law and eight grandchildren and of course their dogs. In more recent years they moved closer to Wicklow town in order to be closer to the services of an urban area during their later years.

Joan’s contribution to female involvement in her much loved sport of hockey is ongoing every day that Three Rock Ladies step onto their home grounds in Grange Road, something she directly enabled. Her contribution should never be lost in the mists of time. She will never be forgotten by those of us who were lucky enough to have known her and enjoyed her inspirational friendship.

Two weeks out from the 2019/2020 season tipping off, here’s the news from HQ

Masters Hockey
Many thanks to Roger West for this piece of information that went amiss during the summer

Stuart Switzer captained the Irish Masters Over 65 team in June at the European Championships in Antwerp (Dragons) – they had a successful tournament finishing higher than the Irish 70s or 60s at the same venue in their respective tournaments. Also, Harrold de Jong and Roger West represented TRR on the Irish O60s Masters with a respectable record: two wins, two draws and two losses. In our six matches we only conceded 5 goals including a well fought 2-0 loss to the world champions (the Dutch).

The next target for all three TRR former players with other squad members, including Robert Haughton, William Haughton and Cedric Christie, at this level is the World Cup in Japan late next year.
