Richard Fitzsimon, Pavilion lunch & more!

Richard Fitzsimon

It is with great sadness we note the death of Richard Fitzsimon, a past Trustee and Captain of the club. We would like to extend our condolences to his family, in particular his daughter Meriel and wife Brigid.

John Findlater, on behalf of TRR, writes:

Richard Fitzsimon died suddenly on 18th January. Richard was a former Club captain and Trustee of TRR. We pass on our sympathy to his family, who have ongoing connections with the Club. Richard’s father, Colonel Fitzsimon was a stalwart umpire and his brother, John, also played for us.

Richard played hockey for TCD, Buccaneers, Leinster and Ireland before focusing on golf at Carrickmines Golf Club, where he was Club captain in 1992. He played for Ireland at hockey from 1960-1969 gaining 17 caps. He was a key player in the TRR teams that won the Irish Senior Cup in 1962,1964 and 1974. He captained TRR in 1960 and again in 1967.The unique competence of TRR teams of that era was that it included three players with outstanding passing skills. John Lavan delivered crisp accurate centres from right wing to Derek Henessey (CF), David Judge hit pinpoint accurate weighted passes from left back and Richard laid off perfect attacking short passes. Dick had a characteristic long stride and reach which earned him the nickname “Long-fellow”. I remember joking to Fitz, soon before he retired, that he better stay on as he had given me hundreds more passes that I to him; I needed time to pay him back.

Sponsorship Opportunities

Hockey in Ireland has a significant and growing footprint – with industry experts ONSIDE estimating 1 in 10 adults having some interest in the sport – and c.100k+ adults are interested in becoming more involved in Hockey today.

TRRHC is uniquely placed with its own facilities and diverse membership categories to support local and national businesses in increasing their brand awareness through sponsorship packages. Sponsorship from local and national companies goes a long way to support the club’s development and progress, and we hugely value the support we have received from our main sponsor Tilman Brewin Dolphin, along with all our many pitch side advertisers.

If you know of a company that wishes to increase its visibility and support local sport through sponsorship, we have packages available to explore with you. Please get in touch with us directly and we can discuss options with you

FREE PUBLIC WIFI IN TRR HC

South Dublin County Council have installed free public WiFi in the club as part of an EU initiative. It will appear as WiFi4EU and there is no need for a password or pin. Logging in will give you access to 30min of free WiFi, and if disconnected you can immediately log in again.

The access points are on the front and the back of the video tower, so once you are in line of sight of the white boxes it should be possible to use the facility.

Men’s Indoor in Mannhiem

TRRHC winning indoor squad from the 21/22 season

Dear Friends and Supporters of TRR Indoor Hockey,

I know that Fraser Morris, John Findlater and I have been plaguing many of you for years to help us to fund the very many National Indoor successes we have had which have led to forays with increasing success into Europe. Some of you have been part of this 15-year journey.

This is not a direct plea for financial contributions although there are students on the squad who would welcome a helping hand.

The main reason I am messaging you all is that this is one of the very rare occasions that we are playing relatively close to home. Indeed, we are playing in the heart of the home of indoor hockey, Germany, in Mannheim. Three Rock Rovers are competing in the EuroHockey Indoor Club trophy, the second-ranked competition for clubs in Europe

There will be a big hall with lots of noisy supporters, accessible trains, flights and relatively reasonable hotels. We are playing at a club level that arguably supersedes what Ireland played when Irish indoor was at its height in the mid-1980s.  We would love it if there was some home support and I am going to give you the details if anyone has the time and inclination to travel. It should be great fun for the spectators, no one hosts or understands the indoor game like the Germans.

The Squad is flying out on Thursday the 16th of February and is playing the first match of the tournament on Friday at 09.30 v the Czech side. Our second match is against the Dutch side Pinoke who are hosting the EHL outdoor finals this Easter at 16.15. Both sides will have players who recently played in the European International Championships. A daunting opening for us.

Aer Lingus and Lufthansa had the best flight options when we booked. Chuck Walker is flying out on Friday morning’s €16 flight and should arrive for the Dutch game. There is a train station at the airport and it is about a 45 min journey from Frankfurt to Mannheim.

The team are returning to Dublin on the 21.30 Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt. There is an earlier Aer Lingus one but the team is required to stay for the closing ceremony.

I really hope to see many of you in Mannheim. Realistically staying in this division would be a fantastic achievement. But this part-time indoor hockey team from Balinteer has punched above its weight many times in the past. In the slightly altered immortal words of Sanka Coffie “Feel the rhythm! Feel the rhyme! Get on up, it’s indoor time. Cool Runnings’

Liam / Fraser / Scott

Reaction Time Testing

My name is Teresa and I am a researcher at the UCD Institute for Sport and Health.

My research aims to investigate reaction times in high-level athletes of different sports using a reaction time board (BATAK Pro).

It is a fun and easy, but effective way to assess the current level of reaction skills in athletes.

For this study, I am looking for male and female participants that are:
– training and competing at a high-level (national or international)
– 18 to 30 years old,
– healthy, free of injury
– regularly competing (for at least 5 years) in one of the following sports:

Tennis, Table Tennis, Badminton, Olympic Handball, Volleyball, Hockey, Boxing, Karate, Swimming, Running, Sprinting or Cycling (other sports can also be considered, please get in touch if you need additional info).

The reaction time testing is completely free of charge for this research.
See the attached poster for more details and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask!
Contact me if you are interested (teresa.baumann@ucdconnect.ie) and we can arrange the testing session in the UCD lab as soon as possible!

Many thanks,
Teresa Baumann, B.Sc

NEW BALCONY OPENING CEREMONY

Our new balcony was officially opened on Saturday 10th September, following a day of glorious weather during which our junior boys trained, our senior teams played friendly matches, and our U16s played a blitz with the Rockets. The events of the day were followed by a BBQ and drinks.

Kara Browning, TRR HC President, in her opening speech thanked the many members who made financial donations without which the project would have been impossible to complete, and in particular, Ray Tilson and the Haughton family who had been particularly generous with their support. Kara also thanked David Nolan Engineering (the contractors who exceeded our expectations in delivering a project that proved challenging at times), Keith Wallace (who assisted the contractors and who made the concrete steps and bases), Derek Squire (club member and past captain who gave his time and professional expertise during the project), Bernie Keogh (club manager) for her help, and Aidan Egan (Structural Engineer). Kara also took the opportunity of thanking all volunteers, their support is a vital part of the operation of the club and without this support nothing could take place.

The cutting of the ribbon to officially mark the opening was carried out by Geoff Brooks, TRR HC Trustee, who played a key role in the installation of the original wooden balcony. Geoff in turn thanked Kara for the huge amount of work that she does for the club in her role as TRR HC President, and for delivering the balcony project, which Geoff said was vital in providing a direct path to the bar !!!.

It was great to see so many past and current club officials, pavilion members, playing members, and youth members and their families, all enjoying the event.  The celebrations extended late into the evening, and a good day was had by all.

NEED A CLEANER?

Our clubhouse cleaner, Samar Abourass, is available for additional work. Samar moved to Ireland from Spain, and references can be obtained by calling Bernie, Club Manager,  on 087 6575297. Samar can be contacted by WhatsApp or email, samarabourass1970@gmail.com , 085 2624589

Reaction Time Testing – Research UCD
