M1 bowed out of the Irish Senior Cup on Saturday, words from Hook Hockey:
Lisnagarvey produced a comeback for the ages to earn their place in the Irish Senior Cup final for the first time in a decade, setting up a showdown with Monkstown on March 20.
They came back from 3-0 down in the last 24 minutes against Three Rock Rovers at Comber Road before eventually winning out 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out as John Tormey’s single save proved the difference.
For Rovers, they will be severely kicking themselves. Playing with a much more aggressive style than when they met Garvey seven days earlier, the Rathfarnham side survived a couple of corner chances for their opponents before building sustained pressure.
James Walker drew the best from Tormey before Luke Madeley broke the deadlock with a low corner shot. Another couple of chances went close for Rovers before the break and they went 2-0 up soon after the resumption, Fred Morris firing a superb backhand over Tormey’s shoulder.
Garvey missed a chance to get back into the tie when Jamie Carr saved a stroke. James Lorimer was shown yellow soon after and, in his absence, Conor Empey stretched the lead out to 3-0 with back post finish.
But the hosts got two back in the next five minutes to pile the pressure on their opponents. Mikey Watt fired high across Carr to get one back almost instantly and, four minutes later, Neal Glassey won a corner which was reset.
Watt fired a shot off the bar but Glassey picked up the pieces and made it 3-2 with 18 minutes remaining. From there on, it was primarily Carr versus the Garvey forwards who drew several big stops from the keeper before Matthew Nelson eventually found an equaliser inside the closing two minutes.
The first six strokes were all scored before Tormey saved in round four and Sean Murray stepped up to score the winner in round five.
In other results, M3 lost 3-2 to Bray, Findo and Louis Glass with the goals. After a good fight back Bray nabbed a winner.
M4 drew 1-1 with Navan, Sam Cogan with a late stroke. Decent performance but couldn’t put away short corners!
L1 lost to Hermes 4-2, Jenna Shuker and Claire Fitz with the goals. A tough result but some excellent penalty corner defence from Barbara and the girls. They have a crunch match this Saturday against Alex at 1pm in HQ. L2 lost to Hermes 3-0 while L3 drew with Mullingar 2-2. L4 won v Bray 3-2, Solo scoring a hat trick!
